Don't drive on the 5 stories

Welcome to the don't drive on the 5 website. This website was set up to encourage as many people as possible to leave their cars at home on the 5th day of each month, and consider using alternative means of transport to get about. For one day each month consider taking the bike to work, walk, take the bus or the train. If you can't do any of these then try and share a car journey with a friend, a colleague, or make new friends by using lift sharing websites.

Save money, save fuel, improve your health, reduce carbon emissions. It's a win win for you and the environment! If you don't drive on the 5, you might want to do it again on the 6th, 7th and 8th ;-).

If the 5th of the month falls on a weekend or non work day, you might want to consider going for a ride, taking a walk to the shops, a family walk to the park or just a walk around the block. If you think that this is a worthwhile cause then please share this site with your friends and really make a difference. Join a don't drive on the 5 event on Facebook by clicking the links below.

Fewer car journeys will reduce the CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. Nearly a quarter of all car trips are under two miles, a distance that can be cycled in under 15 minutes. Cycling two-mile trips could save you over £600 each year in fuel. Many car journeys are just one mile, which would normally take just 20 minutes to walk. Walking your one-mile trips could save you over £160 each year in fuel. Walking briskly on a regular basis is good for your heart and lungs, helps burn calories and is a good way to a healthier active life.*

Average commute in the UK is 8.5miles, average car does 37.7mpg and producing 150g/km CO2. If you leave your car at home just 12 times a year (on the 5th) on the average commute you'll save 204 miles on your car, over 5 gallons of fuel, 49.3kg of CO2 emissions and £32 in fuel costs. If just 1% of the drivers in the UK joined us each month, we'd save 112,500 gallons of fuel on every don't drive on the 5 day and reduce our carbon emissions annually by over 13 million kilos!

If you leave the car at home, take the bike, walk, get a lift or use public transport, tell us about it and we'll publish a selection of your experiences
